Thuma Forest Reserve is in the Great Rift Valley Escarpment 80km from Lilongwe. The landscape is rugged, covered with Brachystegia woodland and bamboo. It is one of the few Forest Reserves in Malawi which is still home to Elephant and Buffalo. Other game include; Greater Kudu, Sharpe's Grysbok, Duiker, Bushbaby, Leopard, Spotted Hyena, Genet, African Civet and many other small species.Thuma is not only of interest for mammals but also trees, plants, birdlife and insects.
The Reserve is in the hands of Wildlife Action Group (from 1996) and they have established scout’s and volunteers who help to protect the reserve which means wildlife is increasing and by your visit you will be contributing towards the protection of Thuma.
The Reserve is perfect for a walking safari, you can visit the remains of an old colonial hospital, cave with ancient rock paintings, climb Thuma Mountain and during the rainy season and beginning of the dry season you can swim in one of the many crystal clear streams.
